Where Mycotoxins Come From

Mycotoxins are toxins produced by certain mold species. They are among the most prevalent toxins people are exposed to, and the sources are ordinary: water-damaged buildings, vehicles and food. Exposure has been recognized as a growing global health concern because of both acute and chronic effects, yet it is rarely tested for, because the symptom picture does not point anywhere obvious.

In our clinic, mold belongs to the "toxins" third of the trauma, toxins and thoughts model. When someone has been sick in a way that does not fit hormones, thyroid or gut, and especially when symptoms track with a home, a workplace or a car, we test.

Reasons we test for mold

  • Symptoms that started after a move, a leak or water damage
  • Fatigue, brain fog or headaches that other testing did not explain
  • Sinus and respiratory complaints that never fully clear
  • Feeling better away from home and worse on return
  • Chronic inflammation with no clear driver
  • Detox pathways that look impaired on other panels

The Symptoms People Miss

Mold does not stop at the sinuses. Mycotoxins are fat-soluble, so they are stored in the body's tissues, and the symptoms spread across systems: brain fog, headaches and fatigue on the cognitive side; joint and muscle aches that persist after arthritis and Lyme have been ruled out; bloating and digestive changes that started after a move, a vacation or a leak; sinus and breathing complaints that never clear. Black mold gets the headlines, but Aspergillus, Penicillium and Chaetomium produce dangerous mycotoxins too, and air conditioning can trap moisture and circulate spores through a whole house.

The MycoTOX Profile

We use the MycoTOX Profile from Mosaic Diagnostics, their most comprehensive assessment of mycotoxins. It is a urine test that detects the mold toxins stored in your tissues, which is the question that matters for your plan: not whether there is mold somewhere, but whether it is in you.

Collection

A urine sample collected at home with a kit we ship to you, with clear instructions and prepaid return packaging, or in the clinic if you are local. Depending on your history your doctor may pair it with food IgE/IgG testing and a stool panel, because clearance depends on how well the gut and liver are detoxing.

After the result

A positive result becomes a two-part plan: reduce the exposure and support the body's clearance. Clearance support typically means glutathione and chlorophyll for the detox pathways plus a binder matched to the toxin found, because some mycotoxins bind to zeolite while others need chlorella or activated charcoal. Exposure means the building: we do not test homes ourselves, but we will tell you when an environmental test or an ANSI/IICRC S520-certified remediation specialist is the next step.

What this test is not

It tests you, not your house. It will not tell you which room has mold or whether a building is safe, and it is not a substitute for a home inspection or medical care for an acute reaction. It is the piece that tells your doctor whether mycotoxins are part of why you feel the way you do.

The Process

  1. ConsultationSymptom timeline, exposure history, other labs. We confirm mold testing fits.
  2. KitShipped to you, or collected in the clinic. Follow the instructions in the box.
  3. ReturnPrepaid packaging back to the lab.
  4. Results appointmentYour doctor reviews which mycotoxins are present and at what level, and how that matches your symptoms.
  5. Clearance planExposure reduction, detox support, gut support and follow-up testing to confirm levels are falling.

Clean Air Is Part of the Plan

Clearing mycotoxins from the body while still breathing them in is a losing race. That is why we carry Triad Aer purifiers through our wellness products: they help remove allergens, mold, toxins and other airborne irritants so the space you recover in supports the recovery. Two habits from our clinics that cost nothing: bleach does not kill mold at the root and can release spores into the air, so use proper remediation instead; and do a sniff test when you walk into a hotel room or rental, because a musty weekend away is a trigger we see patients come home with.

Questions People Ask Us

How do I know if mold is my problem?

You usually do not, which is the point of testing. The strongest clues are a symptom timeline that matches a home, workplace or vehicle, and feeling different when you are away from it.

Does this test my home?

No. It measures mycotoxins in you. Testing the building is a separate step we can talk through if your result is positive.

What happens if I test positive?

You get a plan: reduce exposure, support the body's clearance, address gut function, and retest to confirm levels are dropping.

Can I do this remotely?

Yes. The kit ships to you and the results appointment is by video.
